Dwight

Nothing special here, just a quick speedpaint of Dwight Schrut from "The Office". I spent an hour on this just seeing if I could get a likeness down (it's always so hard to do that). Anyways, I limited myself to an hour and I won't be coming back to this one but just something for fun ;)
Here's another illustration I did for Mystic Warlords of Ka'a https://www.facebook.com/mysticwarlords?sk=wall

Definitely not crazy about this pic :( Oh man I wish I could show you some of the freelance I've been doing lately but of course with NDA's it'll be awhile. But alas you get to see how I improved over time and you get to take part in my artistic journey :)

Ok so right off the back I wanna say I hate these pictures. But as promised I'll show you the work I did even if I didn't like it. These pictures suck on a number of levels but we're all growing as artists so it's just another stop along the way to improvement. Anyways, created for Mystic Warlords of Ka'a [link]

Benthos the Water Bearer

Here's another illustration I did for Mystic Warlords of Ka'a [link]. As always I wish I would have had more time than just a day on these. There's so much more I wish I could have done but that's the nature of the game. I figure I'll show my work regardless of whether I like it or not...not every piece is always gold lol :)

Cat Mad king

Here's another illustration I did for Mystic Warlords of Ka'a Link. You know as I look back on them I always think, man this sucks! But it's a learning process. I do wish though that I would have had more than a day to work on this piece. Oh well! Enjoy!

Dwarf

Here's another illustration I did for Mystic Warlords of Ka'a Link. It's a bit different in the final card and I never really cared how that one turned out, so here's the version I prefer.

Steampunk Elf Painting Process

I was rummaging through my files and I thought "I've never shown my painting process for my Steampunk Elf". So here it is :)
Here's the process that I took to make my Rotting Zombie Illustration for Mystic Warlords of Ka'a [link]

I forgot to take most of my .psd files for iterations and just took the final .psd files. However, this is one of the few that I actually have to show my process. On a side note I almost never actually do a painting in grayscale. Since May 2011 I almost exculusively paint in color. It seems to speed up my process and I think the colors look better in the finals. Well, hope you enjoy!

Where in the world have I been?

Hey everybody!!! So I've been completely lazy and haven't updated in quite some time and I figured now would be just as good a time as any to update everyone on what I've been up to. That is if you're interested lol :)

Well back in January (2011) I started working as an in-house illustrator/concept artist for Dire Wolf Digital in Denver, CO [link]

I ended up getting to work with a lot of talented people on some very cool projects, which sadly I cannot speak about (NDA's) and what not. However the project that I can speak about (and the one that I spent the majority of my time on) was a fun facebook game named "Mystic Warlords of Ka'a" (based on the CBS series "The Big Bang Theory") [link]

I ended up getting to do all of the initial concept work on the look of the game and as we continued to refine the look I got to play a major role in that as well. I did a number of card illustrations (well over 50) and even had a hand in doing some of the Flash animations and other miscellaneous tasks. It was a great experience and I was able to really learn and grow in that environment, especially since we were tasked with doing a minimum of 4 card illustrations per week! Alas, it was not meant to be a permanent situation as a summer full of 60-65 hour work weeks with no end in sight was not going to work out for the well-being of my family life. So I decided to put in my two-week notice and by the beginning of October I had left the wonderful people at Dire Wolf Digital in order to pursue a career as a freelance illustrator and concept artist.

Since October I've had the chance to work on Star Wars X-Wing and Lord of the Rings for Fantasy Flight Games and I also finished a piece for the magazine Kobold Quarterly. I've also got a number of other projects coming up in the near future but what is most exciting for me is that I'm going to start branching out and attending comic conventions, selling prints, making contacts and working towards some of my goals such as doing freelance for Wizards of the Coast and illustrating covers for Marvel and DC. I've also got some personal creations that I would eventually like to see come to fruition either in the form of a comic or a novel. Lofty goals I know but none the less they are on my to-do list!

On a side note, I'll be trying to post an illustration or two each day from the work that I did for Mystic Warlords of Ka'a. You'll get to see the good the bad and the ugly and see how I had to bust my butt in order to make my weekly quota (since most pics from start to finish were 10-12 hours).

Also, for those that are interested I am always available for commissions. Just send me a message and we can talk prices. I'll try and put something up here on DA which will give my prices so you know my rates.

Well I think that's it! If you stuck through til the end of this I hope you enjoyed it! Take care and God Bless!

P.S. Here are some promo pics from Mystic Warlords of Ka'a that I illustrated!

Sketches

Just having a little fun with my new pencil brushes! I definitely dig the feel of them, very close to traditional in my opinion and they look pretty traditional too :) Enjoy!

Concept Work For Ninjump Delux and Army of Darkness Defense

Here's some work that I did for Backflip Studios [link] back in October for Army of Darkness Defense. Looking back now I see some issues in the painting (as you always do lol) but it was good at the time for a rush job and I'm glad to see that I've grown since that time. It's interesting to see what elements they used in game and what they didn't but I found it to be a great experience and really helped me to grow. A special thanks to their Art Director Ryan Drag for taking a chance with me and giving me the opportunity to work on such a fun title. Hope you enjoy!

Steampunk Elf

Hey Kiddies!

So it's been quite some time since I've posted anything. I've been busy at work learning a whole lot and seeing how far I have to still go. Luckily I've got some great people to learn from!

This is a piece based off of a sketch that I had to do to get my job. As you can see the topic was super cool, a steampunk elf! So I did some silhouette studies and was told which one to choose from there and then went to a simple sketch line drawing. Anyways it was super fun to do and luckily I got the job! Still, I always wanted to paint it up so here it is!

This took three months to do because I'd get busy and would work on other stuff but finally it's finished! Total time was just shy of 16 hours. Painted in Photoshop CS4 with my Wacom Intous A4 Tablet.

Here's a pick that I did a couple of months back for World Leaderz and just got permission to post. It's Herodias, the one who served John the Baptist's head on a platter. Enjoy :)
